Well as per usual,the Cambridge BMX club put on one hell of a meeting. The track was in top shape and very fast. (i did a few laps)
Just like the 2006 nationals there, everything ran like clockwork. For some reason, events held at this venue just have an electric atmosphere. Even as a spectator, i was as excited about watching all the age groups as if i had been riding.. Well done to the over 30 winners, shimanski,rmc and moonie, penney and ellis.. The race of the weekend had to be the 30/34 final race with the lead changing several times..very entertaining. Was also great to see a few old schoolers riding and watching..with dougy matheson right back into the thick of things finishing 2nd and kevin brinsden having a crack in the 40/44 cruiser also.. I also spotted brent (huggie)burrows and had a chat, while a couple of other legends scott hazelwood and tim carroll were watching from the sidelines with an excited look about giving it a go!! Thanks to mr nelson for the accomodation and great hospitality!!

well the norths are nearly here, october 20/21 in hamilton. i cant wait for racing to start again and mixing it with the 35/39 cruiser boys. i have to redeem myself after falling at the nationals!! with the first corner being tar sealed now, it should create exiting racing.
there was some talk earlier about an old school display. is anyone keen to showoff their old beauties? i hope all you old bmxers that have been thinking/talking about starting again, are still turning up to the norths.see you all there

Great to see that the Super Cruiser is obviously helping with some riders. Congratulations must go out to regulars on the circuit that showed what they are made of in Adelaide: Brian Ellis World 2 - 45+ (the only one that could beat him happened to be one Mr Eric Rupe), Steve Schimanski World 3 - 30/34, Paul "Mooney" Luttrell World 4 - 40/44, Laurie Penney World 4 - 45+. Well done guys, a quick rest and then you can show off that pace by taking home some money as well.

Just like to thank Dave Kidd an Steve Amrein for organizing the Staurday nite piss-up at The Park Motel 61 Waihi Rd , should be totally RAD. B.Y.O , yes Daz that means you have to bring more than your self, you just can't drink what ever BIG Steves drinking. Sounds like there will be good numbers for racing (or sould i say ,rolling around on old bikes that are way to small for us ,an make the crowds laugh), thats as long as Glen picks up all those Auck boys that say they are coming. One thing is for sure i'll be going hard on the Waters yea.

Thanks to the Mconie family, i have been in touch with one of their family members. This guy has given me 3 photo albums full of the first ever race meeting in new zealand, the first unnoficial 2 day nationals meeting in paraparaumu in 1979, the first official nationals at wainuiomata race programme (inc results) and dozens of news paper clippings about international riders visiting,and also nz riders going abroad.
I imagine this will take some time to scan and document,but believe me, when you see what i have in front of me, you will be left amazed! Watch this space................!!

I really hate it when you get to the end of the year, and you get all those crap tv shows like the best shortland st moments... the best sporting moments...how many times britney went to rehab...!! So i thought id go one better and create my own...
My highlights of bmx this year would be... Starting on the first of january in christchurch, and doing a further 14 trips around the country ending in hawera for their track opening. Finishing nz2 in the nationals 20" class Going to the Hawera indoor and riding old school bikes, and meeting glenn rowell (aka radical rick rahoul) Watching the old school class grow, and become the o.s.c.a.r.s Coaching a boy from our club for 10 months and watching him become a mighty 11,and to win the ivan maujer award for best kiwi. Attending the first bmx reunion and meeting some of the countries icons. Winning the taupo old school final, and finally...watching Maris Strombergs win the worlds and follow it up with a gold at the olympics whilst riding a ONE!! Lows of bmx in 2008 Hitting the gate in my cruiser final at the nationals. Mohi didnt take hooper out like he promised in the nationals 20" final. Busting my ribs before the pre norths and missing out on a shot at the title New zealand mighty 11s missing out by 1 point for victory!! Watching mohi do the lonegan shuffle ( sorry bro,but its not nice seeing a fellow competitor out cold) I think thats about it. Please add to this and share your memories of the year......... not including the kiwis shane

| oldschoolbmx | Retro ride for auckland? | 12 | Dec 3 2008, 10:40 PM EST by 949 | ||||

A few of us are throwing around the idea of a retro race in auckland. timing is the crucial part. were looking at sometime from february and before the hawera indoor in may. we are looking at auckland because there seems to be alot of old schoolers up there that need some incouragement. we know you want to ride, but just cant get yourself to the track, so maybe if we bring it to you, then you"ll have no excuse. once you have a taste of the old school racing, you wont look back. track choice is the other thing. obviously north harbour wouldnt suit a retro race, nor would east city. who wants to stick a leg out on a tar sealed berm? so that leaves waitakere or papakura, or even scw..? but im not sure on that tracks availability due to the new track being built? there are several meetings we can tie it in with, but remember where the nats are etc..
look at the calendar and see what fits? where open to suggestions .how many are keen for this?? if i can travel from wellington, im sure you can make it across the bridge!!!!!!!!

Ok,this is just my 5cents worth. is this really going to work? im not entirely sure how this is going to work but if you get the top 32 riders in the world and get them to race a few motos and then find the top 8 ,then they race a deam man final? any one of the 32 could win gold on their given day or favourite track and then if 8 race 1 race to decide gold/silver/bronze?? will this really determine whos the best in the world from one race? correct me if im wrong,? will it be 3 finals? anyhow,as much as i love the idea of bmx at the olympics purely for the global promotion of the sport,will it last? does anyone believe it will make it to 2012 olympics? like the downhill racing at the x games,it was only a 5 minute fizzer,yet was very exciting from a spectators point of veiw. i dont want to sound like im against it,but how many people out there think it will last?
as i said,this is my 5 cents...whats yours?
